Summary of Simply Fly
This is the journey of a boy born in a remote village, who went from riding a bullock cart to owning an airline, a journey of an entrepreneur who built India's first and largest low-cost airline Filled with rich anecdotes of everyday struggles and joys, this is the awe-inspiring story of Captain G.R. Gopinath. This autobiography narrates in gritty detail Captain Gopinath's incredible journey: quitting the Indian Army in the late 1970s with a princely gratuity of Rs 6500, going back to his farm land inundated by the river, converting a piece of barren land to set up a farm for ecologically sustainable silkworm rearing, winning the Rolex award for it, his loves and passions, his extraordinary determination to launch an airline (which touched a crazy market cap of US$ 1.1 billion in less than four years ), in the process rewriting aviation history
Indiaplaza Review
The just released autobiography of Captain Gopinath,
Simply Fly ia a wonderful book.
We all know of Captain G R Gopinath (Captain Gopi to his friends) the
entrepreneur who changed the face of Indian aviation.
But read this book for a trait most of us don’t know - Captain Gopi is a super
storyteller and he brings all his story telling skills to the fore in his just
released book. The result is gripping drama.
The first part of the book is all about Captain Gopi's early days in a farmland,
how he was brought up strictly in Sainik School, his education at the NDA and
his days in the Indian army. These parts are quite interesting and filled with
interesting stories and incidents (his experiences as an award winning farmer
and the experiments with donkeys is quite hilarious!) because they bring out the
steel that got imbibed in his character in the early days, steel that played a
big part in the Air Deccan story.
The book really comes into its own in the second part where the Air Deccan story
begins and this makes for riveting drama.
Filled with anecdotes and interactions involving India's high and mighty both
from the private and from the government sectors, the book is clearly
“unputdownable” The stand out incidents involve Captain's efforts in launching
the airline, the trials and tribulations of fast growth and competition from
other airlines, personal interactions with Anil Ambani and Vijay Mallya both of
whom wanted to invest or acquire India's first LCC (low cost airline) and the
final falling out with Mallya and how Captain walked out from Kingfisher
distressed and disappointed at how it all turned out.
One of his master strokes was the decision to get R K Laxman's Common Man as the
airline mascot and the Captain’s meeting with Laxman in Mumbai is beautifully
told.
We all credit Captain Gopinath for changing the face of Indian aviation and he
deserves all the accolades and more.
What we now know is that he is probably as good a story teller as he is an
entrepreneur.
In an India that is crying out for entrepreneurs and in a system where starting
something and succeeding is real hard work, this book can be inspirational for
anyone with dreams in his or her eyes.
And if you are already an entrepreneur, then like the Captain says “If you have
been there and done that, buy it just for the lark"
Take a bow Captain, we enjoyed
